If you judge a book by its cover, you might miss out on an awesome story!

Stories Matter is where The Silhouette Project began - proudly funded by National Endowment of the Arts (NEA) funded grant in collaboration with Mizel Museum.

In 2013, Stories Matter was the first incarnation of working with the shadowed figure, a silhouette.

The project involved high school students working to deepen their understanding of the many factors and stories that shape who they are and to share their voices through art.

This exhibition echoes a central aspect of the project, where each student individually created an altered book and collectively created a “page” of this life-size accordion book which consists of expressions of identity through participating classes. Participants combined sharing their own personal stories as springboards to create their own life connections, personal symbols and powerful descriptive words and used spoken word to compose and create an original collective poem.

This intensive residency embodied rich and varied forms of self-expression:  creating individually and collectively, photographic composition and technique, drawing, writing, contemplative process, and collaborative decision making.

The inspiration of Stories Matter is that the more we know ourselves and one another, the safer it becomes to show up and express our own spark of the extraordinary.  When this happens, our schools become communities of learners that house the mosaic of our different voices, beliefs, perspectives, and dreams.
